James P. Grifo

Attorney

Jamie is a member of the CH& Land Use practice group. His practice focuses on land use, real property, and environmental matters, with an emphasis on helping landowners navigate complex regulatory frameworks and resolve disputes involving their property rights.

Jamie represents clients in administrative and judicial proceedings, including challenges to local, state, and federal land use decisions. He has experience handling current use taxation matters before county Boards of Equalization and the Washington State Board of Tax Appeals. Jamie is experienced in alternative dispute resolution processes (including facilitation, mediation, and arbitration) and has served as a mediator in over 100 cases.

Prior to joining the firm, Jamie maintained a solo practice on San Juan Island, where he developed a broad practice serving individuals and small businesses.

Jamie earned his J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law, where he focused his studies on land use, environmental, and natural resources law. While in law school, he served on the editorial board of the Journal of Environmental Law and Litigation and worked as a research assistant. He also studied environmental law and policy at Vermont Law School.

Jamie has lived on San Juan Island since 2011. He and his family co-founded Full Belly Farm, a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing access to sustainably grown produce.

  • In his spare time, Jamie enjoys vegetable gardening, hiking, cooking, swimming, running, fishing, traveling, and sailing. He is an accomplished cellist, having performed with the Baroque Orchestra of Boonton, NJ.
  • Jamie has intermediate proficiency in spoken Mandarin Chinese and is familiar with simplified Chinese characters.
