CH& Receives Favorable Land Use Verdict in Federal Court for Seattle High School to Update Athletic Field Sound and Lighting

Case Background:

A major dispute between Bishop Blanchet High School, the City of Seattle, and neighborhood community members arose out of Blanchet’s proposal for athletic field lighting and sound system.

How CH& Helped:

In Federal Court, CH& applied its expertise with the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, and not only obtained approval of the field lights but also recovered damages and attorneys’ fees for the School.

Results:

Assisted school in better utilization of their sports field through adequate lighting and sound for school functions, and by allowing for arena use during hours of darkness during winter months.  Additionally, CH& also established:

  • Reconciliation of community claims in multiple federal and city hearings
  • Reconsideration from City of Seattle on permit application regarding light emissions, noise ordinances, and neighborhood traffic regulations
  • Decision issued by City of Seattle approving field lights and field broadcast system
  • Successful negotiation of numerous acceptable conditions relating to the concerns brought by opponents
